Fossil wood

Biogenous sedimentary rock.
This sample is a piece of fossil wood of Pennsylvanian age. The orginal wood tree trunk was likely buried in a coal swamp by a flood or volcanic eruption in the ancient Appalachian Basin region. It survived microbial decay as the woody material was slowly replaced by silica dissovled in groundwater. It was found in abandoned coal mine tailings, Washington County, Ohio.
